How to Buy a car in Poland

Sure, I can provide you with some information on buying a car in Poland. Here are some steps you can follow:

  1. Determine your budget: The first step is to figure out how much you can afford to spend on a car. This will help you narrow down your options and ensure you don’t overspend.
  2. Research: Once you have a budget in mind, start researching different car models that fit your needs and budget. You can check out online car sales platforms such as Otomoto.pl or AutoScout24.pl to get an idea of the prices and availability.
  3. Inspection: When you find a car that you are interested in, schedule an inspection with a mechanic to make sure the car is in good condition. It is important to thoroughly check the car before making any purchases.
  4. Negotiate: If everything checks out, negotiate the price with the seller. You can use the information you gathered during your research to help you negotiate a fair price.
  5. Documentation: Once you have agreed on a price, make sure all the necessary documentation is in order, including registration documents, proof of insurance, and a valid technical inspection certificate.
  6. Payment: You can either pay in cash or use a bank transfer to make the payment. Make sure to get a receipt for the payment.
  7. Registration: Finally, register the car with the local authorities and get new license plates.

It is important to note that there may be some additional fees and taxes associated with buying a car in Poland, so make sure to budget for those as well.

Documents you get

Once the transaction is complete, you will get a set which ought to include:

  • vehicle history card
  • registration document
  • insurance policy (if still valid)
  • car keys (usually two sets)

After the purchase you have 30 days to register the new car

Your purchase

You may be relieved to learn that there are no restrictions for foreigners when it comes to buying cars or other vehicles. You are free to buy your dream car either from a dealer or a used one. With the latter option, you have a few paths to choose: dealership, resale centres, or individual sellers, e.g. via the Internet. In the second case, make sure you check the overall condition of the vehicle, oil, tires and engine.

Vehicle registration

To register your newly bought car, one needs to visit the communication department at a town hall (or a local council – powiat office). The new owners should also bring along:

  • vehicle registration application form
  • ID (passport is also possible) with visa or residence card
  • vehicle ownership proof (contract, VAT invoice or final court decision)
  • registration document
  • vehicle history card (if there is one)
  • licence plates
  • proof of temporary registered address in Poland
  • proxy form (if you use a proxy who e.g. helps you with Polish)

How much?

The full cost if you buy new licence plates should not exceed around PLN 180. If you have your own plates, it should be less. However, there might be some individual cases where registering a car may cost much more.
